EMPTY CHAIRS

Kitarakuja, Helsinki
Community Garden, Sept - Nov 2023.

My wondering mind, wandering around the gardens, thinking about chairs...

“...I started thinking about how even in their occupants' absence, they were still full. They stood there - seemingly their own agentic beings. And in their occupants' absence, I imagined their presence - two people sitting back enjoying each other’s company and the company of their gardens.
I suppose my personal response to this was finding more fullness and stillness in myself despite others’ absence.”

When I returned to university in Australia, I started making prints of them...

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the lands on which I mostly live, work and play - the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung people of the Kulin Nation and the Brayakaulung people of the Gunaikurnai Nation, where I grew up and return to often. I pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and recognise their continued connection to Country and culture, and as the first and most enduring storytellers of these lands. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
